The Soda that is beneficial for your health, home and wallet! [Tracy's Tips n Treats]

The Soda that is beneficial for your health, home and wallet!

Baking Soda that is!  This inexpensive product can help with your body AND home! Household cleaners and many beauty/hygiene products can get pretty pricy, especially the organic healthy ones.

Here are some of my favorite Baking Soda benefits:

- Increases your alkalinity (helping you to fight off disease and stomach issues)

- Kills fungi and mold

- Reduces fatigue

- Removes soap scum, grime and dirt

Top Five Places To Use Baking Soda:

1. Kitchen:

- Place some baking soda onto a wet cloth and wipe stainless steel. Remove with another clean wet wipe and buff away with a dry cloth.

- Pour a tablespoon to each dishwasher load to shine and clean the dishes AND dishwasher.

- Soak any coffee or tea stained products in sink with warm water and about ½ cup baking soda for a couple hours.

2. Bathroom:

- Mix baking soda with castile soap and scrub your tub, shower and sink . Rub in baking soda to your shower curtain to clean stains.

- Make your own whitening toothpaste with baking soda, coconut oil, vegetable glycerin, and peppermint essential oils

-Mix ½ cup baking soda and ¼ cup vinegar down the drain and let sit for 15 minutes. Then drain with hot water.

3. Laundry Room:

- Put a tablespoon into each load of laundry (in the detergent receptacle) to help brighten and deep clean clothes.

4. Living Room:

-Sprinkle baking soda onto carpet. Allow it to sit for 20 minutes and then vacuum.

5. Body (Please constantly check your Ph with strips to make sure you are not over consuming. Dr. Axe recommends not going over 5 grams a day. Please check in with your doctor if you are on any medications before consuming baking soda):

- Baking soda helps reduce acid and increase alkalinity. –Add a tablespoon or two into 2 cups in filtered water to help with heartburn, kidneys and ulcers.

- Rub baking soda onto bug bites to reduce redness and infection.

If you are on any medications or struggling with health issue please read below.

This amazing product can be so beneficial to your health, home and wallet. But, we must use everything safely. Dr. Axe States:

“People who consume too much baking soda have reportedly developed blood chemistry imbalances and heart malfunction (ineffective pumping).

If you have edema, liver disease, kidney disease or high blood pressure, you should avoid taking baking soda internally. You should also refrain from consuming baking soda if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not allow children under the age of five to consume baking soda.

If you are on prescription drugs, consult your doctor before consuming baking soda, and make sure you speak to your doctor about drinking baking soda if you are on a sodium-restricted diet.

Some products that may interact with baking soda include aspirin and other salicylates, barbiturates, calcium supplements, corticosteroids, medications with a special coating to protect the stomach, lithium, quinidine, and diuretics.”

Tracy's Great Guacamole [Tracy's Tips n Treats]

My absolute favorite dip! Try to chopping the ingredients bigger for a chunkier version of this amazing nutritious dish. Avocados are a GREAT fat source for metabolism and many of the other ingredients are GREAT for your liver.

Ingredients

- 2 medium sized avocados
- 1 handful fresh cilantro (cleaned and chopped)
- 1 very small red onion (or 1/2 small/medium)
- 1 small tomato
- 1 clove garlic (minced)
- 1/2 fresh lime juice
- Salt (to taste)
-  1/2-1 teaspoon cumin

Directions

1. Cut up avocados and put into a bowl.
2. Add cleaned and chopped cilantro (It is best to let it air dry before you try to chop).
3. Add onion, tomato and garlic
4. Gradually add salt, cumin, and lime juice and stop adding when it tastes good to you
5. Store in the fridge (with the avocado pit in it to keep fresh) for at least an hour

--> Guacamole with last 1-2 days. You can help the freshness by putting the pit in it and also squirting a bit of lemon juice. The less air that gets to it the less likely it will brown.

--> Add to your favorite burger or just eat with your favorite chips! See my Paleo Tortilla Chips post for Paleo style chips.

Five Foods For Your Liver and Livelihood [Tracy's Tips n Treats]

According to Andrea Nakayama of Replenish and Holistic m. Nutrition Lab: "Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common liver conditions around the globe. It most affects those who are obese and/or have Type II Diabetes or insulin resistance. Yet the person with a fatty liver doesn't need to appear to be overweight."

The liver does a HUGE job for our bodies everyday. It's functions include:

- Bile conductor (helps you digest fats)
- Processes all nutrients
- Balances hormones
- Metabolizes carbohydrates
- Filters your blood of toxins

With that being said, our liver is something we should ALL take care of. Studies are showing more and more that the foods we are eating are doing as much damage to this vital organ as a excessive alcoholic. So, it doesn't matter if your "poison" is whiskey or a cupcake, both are taxing to your liver.

As Nakayama states: "Caring for your liver requires some key components including:
- Boosting vegetable and low-glycemic fruit intake.
- Increasing fiber and decreasing refined carbohydrate consumption.

Below are my TOP FIVE Foods to support and cleanse the liver (For even more information check out my grocery shopping blog to see how to shop for, store and eat these foods):

1. Cilantro
This food is fantastic for so many reasons, but mostly it helps to pull heavy metals out of the body.
Eat it Up: Try in your favorite guacamole. Don't like the taste? Then throw a handful into a smoothie to still get the super benefits.

2. Onions
These are the "sponge" of foods. Onions have the ability to suck up all the yucky toxins in your liver. Don't believe me? Put an onion by a stinky pair of shoes over night. In the morning smell that bad boy. It prolly stinks just like those icky sneaks.
Eat it Up: With this food being so versatile, it should be easy to eat onions every day. I love to sauté and eat them raw.

3. Garlic
This food may leave you smelling just like it. If it has the ability to come out your pores just imagine all the cleaning it's doing in your body though.
Eat it Up: Again, garlic is so versatile, and used in so many foods it's doesn't require you to get creative. Sauté or eat raw every chance you get.

4. Red Peppers
The color of the pepper actually does mean something. The red color contains vital nutrients to the body hat support you liver function.
Eat it up: I love to slice up a red pepper and use to dip into some roasted red pepper hummus for a snack. Adding to your favorite stir fry is another way to truly enjoy red peppers.

5. Grapefruit (preferably red/pink)
This is my FAVORITE citrus food. The darker the color of the grape hurt the more liver supporting nutrients. It makes for a great snack, especially on a hot day.
Eat it Up: Either slice in half and enjoy with a spoon, or cut up slices and put in your water for a refreshing drink on a hot day. I like to add a little mint in the water too ;)

Eating these foods throughout the week or some, like cilantro, onions and garlic daily, can truly help heal and support your liver and your life.

And no need to worry. Nakayama states: "For most of us (and unless disease state is quite progressed), the liver is wildly regenerative. It heals better than most organs in the body"!

Take it into Action:
Good news for all to hear! Which foods are you going to commit to eating this week? Any fun recipe you want to share with all? Post here or come on over to my facebook page and let me know!
